A couple weeks ago, in a previous podcast episode about well booster pumps, I briefly mentioned Pumptec. If you have a low water level, or low water table, you really should consider installing a Pumptec. A Pumptec is sometimes referred to as a pump saver, because that’s exactly what it does! The unit gets installed near your well tank and if your well dries up, the Pumptec will automatically shut off your well pump prior to it becoming damaged — or even worse — failing. You definitely don’t want it to get to the point of complete failure. The Pumptec helps protect your well pump from damage due to running out of water. That's the abbreviated version of what it is and what it does.
To go into further detail: Pumptec is used in pump control systems, designed to protect pumps and motors from potential damage caused by various operating conditions. In numerous industries, it's an essential component in where pumps are used — including agriculture, irrigation, water treatment, and industrial processes.
The primary function of Pumptec is to monitor and regulate the performance of pumps, ensuring their efficient and reliable operation. It constantly monitors key parameters and diagnoses motor load to prevent pump or motor failure due to adverse conditions such as low-flow wells, pump damage, clogging, bound pumps, or power mishaps. It also protects during dry well or underload conditions, over and under voltage, rapid cycling, air or gas locked pumps, broken shafts or couplings, clogged screen, faulty check valve, worn pump parts, and even waterlogged well or storage tanks. That was definitely a mouthful! To sum it up: by analyzing all of this, Pumptec can detect abnormal conditions or potential issues that could harm the pump or the motor.
One of the critical features of Pumptec is its ability to provide pump protection against dry running, also known as run-dry protection. Dry running is when the pump operates without sufficient fluid, which causes overheating, damage to the pump components, and even complete pump failure. Pumptec uses sensors to detect the absence of fluid flow and automatically shuts down the pump, preventing any damage.
Furthermore, Pumptec offers protection against issues like low voltage, power surges, overloads, and underloads. It detects voltage fluctuations and unstable power supply — triggering the appropriate response to safeguard the pump and motor.
In addition to protection, Pumptec also provides diagnostic capabilities. It can log data, generate reports, and provide real-time feedback on pump performance. This information helps with analyzing pump behavior, identifying potential inefficiencies or maintenance requirements, and optimizing pump performance.
Overall, Pumptec plays a vital role in enhancing pump reliability, extending equipment lifespan, and reducing costly repairs or replacements.
