TRANSCRIPT:

Hard water is very common. On this podcast episode, we'll delve into what hard water is, its causes, and the potential impact it can have on our homes and health.

Defining Hard Water
Hard water is water that contains high levels of dissolved minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium. These minerals accumulate in water sources as it passes through deposits of limestone, chalk, or gypsum. The higher the concentration of these minerals, the harder the water becomes. Did you know that for the most part, water, falling as rain, is pure? But not for very long. Water then falls through the smoke and pollutants in the sky. By the time it reaches the ground it’s already contaminated. Once water reaches the ground it comes into contact with streams, rivers, runoff from the streets and fields where there could be pollutants such as oil and pesticides mixing into our water that eventually ends up in our homes.

Causes and Effects
The presence of calcium and magnesium minerals in water leads to various things. When hard water is in your home, it can result in the formation of mineral deposits, known as scale — in pipes, appliances, and fixtures. Scale buildup can reduce water flow, decrease appliance efficiency, and increase energy consumption. Hard water interferes with the lathering of soaps and detergents — making it more difficult to wash and get things clean (including our bodies). And it leaves behind soap scum on surfaces. Hard water also reduces the efficiency of appliances and reduces their lifespan.

Implications for Health
While hard water is generally safe to consume, it may have certain implications for health. Some studies suggest a potential correlation between high calcium and magnesium intake through hard water and a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. However, excessive mineral intake could be problematic for individuals who already have kidney-related health issues. Additionally, the minerals present in hard water can leave a residue, resulting in irritated and dry skin. Using water softeners or installing filtration systems can mitigate these health concerns.

Hard water is a common water quality issue that can impact various aspects of our lives, from household maintenance to personal health. Understanding the causes and effects of hard water enables us to take necessary precautions to explore treatment options.

Personally, I have been spoiled with soft water my whole life. When I go to a hotel I dread hopping in the shower knowing that my experience just won't be the same as at home. For those of you with soft water, I’m sure you can relate to this. See you next time!
