How Long Do Garbage Disposals Last?
Garbage disposals usually last about 10 to 12 years, but with good care, they can last longer. If you don’t take care of them, they might need to be replaced much sooner.
Deciding whether to repair or replace your garbage disposal depends on how old it is and what's wrong with it. A newer unit with a minor issue, like a broken blade, can probably be fixed cheaply. But if your disposal is around 10 years old and has multiple problems, it might be better to just get a new one.
Here are some signs it might be time to replace your garbage disposal:
Slow Drainage: If your sink drains slowly even when the disposal is on, you might have a clog or your disposal could be wearing out. If clearing the drain doesn’t help, it’s likely time for a new disposal.
Bad Smells: Persistent bad smells from your sink could mean there’s old food and gunk stuck in your disposal. If cleaning doesn’t get rid of the odor, it’s probably time for a replacement.
Leaks: If you find water leaking from your garbage disposal, it could mean the seals or gaskets are worn out. While you can repair a leak, it’s often cheaper and easier to just replace the unit.
Weird Noises: If it’s making strange noises, it might be because something like a piece of silverware fell in the garbage disposal. If you can’t find anything stuck, the disposal might have a mechanical problem, which could mean it’s time for a new one.
Eventually, all garbage disposals need to be replaced. If you have a home warranty, it might help cover the cost of getting a new one when the time comes.
